What a Guy

09 December 2003

The incredible career of Australian painter Guy Warren receives a well-deserved tribute, thanks to a Mosman Art Gallery touring exhibition, which is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of his work.

Presence & Landscape celebrates Guy Warren’s life and career through 80 significant paintings, drawings and prints, as well as sketchbooks and photographic memorabilia. The works in the exhibition have been drawn from numerous public and private collections, including the artist’s own.

Born in Goulburn in 1921, Guy Warren's career spans more than six decades. Following his World War II service on Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, Warren trained at East Sydney Technical College (now The National Art School) with fellow artists Robert Klippel and Tony Tuckson.

Warren's primary artistic concerns are the interdependence of mankind and the landscape. His work also betrays a fascination with the art of ancient Chinese, Oceanic and Aboriginal cultures, and the use of universal symbols and cross cultural myths.

Guy Warren has held 46 solo exhibitions during his long career, and has been the recipient of 26 major art prizes and awards. In 1998 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong, and in 1999 was awarded an Order of Australia Medal, for his services to Australian art and culture.
