Jerusalem String Quartet and Australian String Quartet

Musica Viva's Guys and Dolls

11 May 2007

Perhaps the single most exciting tour of Musica Viva's 2007 season begins later this month, when the veteran concert promoter combines the four young men of Europe's acclaimed Jerusalem String Quartet with the four young women of Australia's own 'new' ASQ (the recently re-badged Tankstream Quartet ).

The program culminates with Felix Mendelssohn's glorious and even more youthful Octet for Strings, op. 20 – a total masterpiece at 16! – and earlier in the evening showcases each of the Quartets separately in Schubert, Janacek and Ross Edwards. The Janacek, played by The Jerusalem, is his intense, deeply passionate First Quartet, based on the story of Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata. The Schubert – the Quartetsatz D 703 – is altogether lighter, but its single movement can still pack quite an emotional punch. The Ross Edwards' Veni Creator Spiritus, not quite a new work (1993), comes from Musica Viva's composer of the year. All in all, quite a line up both of performers and music.
