One in a Hundred - a new play about Schizophrenia
09 May 2007
1 in 100 is a play about schizophrenia and how it impacts on relationships. In any one year in Australia, 20% of the population suffers from mental health issues ranging from depression through to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but the community is not well informed about such conditions and there is often stigma attached to those people with a mental health condition. The arts can be used very effectively to raise community awareness about mental health conditions, remove the stigma and replace it with compassion for both the person afflicted and their carers.
Canberra born writer, Mary Rachel Brown wrote the play after extensive consultations with mental health care providers in both Sydney and Canberra.
1 in 100 is the story of Simon and his mother, Sue and their battle to maintain their relationship when Simon develops schizophrenia. The play focuses on the inner world of Simon's altered perception and loss of self and Sue's grief and her questions of self-blame.
1 in 100 stars Tracy Mann (AFI Best Actress and Logie award winner) as Sue and Lindsay Farris as Simon.
Well-known Canberra Director, Carol Woodrow worked with Mary Rachel Brown to develop, produce and direct the play. Media Team Australia, a not-for-profit organisation that helps community groups to develop and professionalise their media, has assisted with the media and marketing.
