Grainger Quartet's first 2007 concert series

21 February 2007

The first of Grainger Quartet's three-part 2007 Subscription Concert Series – Genesis – opens at Brisbane's Conservatorium Theatre on 24 March, followed by performances in Sydney on Thursday 29 March, Adelaide on Saturday 31 March and Melbourne on Tuesday 3 April.

Grainger Quartet comprises violinists Natsuko Yoshimoto, James Cuddeford, violist Jeremy Williams, (formerly of the Australian String Quartet) and cellist Patrick Murphy.

The Genesis program includes much loved favourites with fresh, contemporary new sounds including an arrangement of a composition by the Quartet's namesake and iconic Australian musician, Percy Grainger.

Arranged by Grainger Quartet's violinist James Cuddeford, it is fitting that a work by the man who put Australia on the classical music map be part of the launch concert.

"We believe that representation of Australian composers and composition is vital to the lifeblood of our musical heritage," said James Cuddeford. "Grainger's Arrival Platform Humlet is an extraordinary piece for viola (solo and massed) and it seemed natural to expand upon the original into a string quartet version for our opening 2007 concert."

The central movement from Barber's famous Adagio for Strings will be played in its original form for the performance. Beethoven's renowned Harp quartet is a virtuosic cornerstone of the repertoire, matching Brahms' Opus 51, No 2. "Brahms A minor quartet was among the first music we played together as Grainger Quartet, so we unanimously agreed it should be programmed," said violist Jeremy Williams.

Subscriptions for this year's concerts are still open.
