2006 Queensland Design Awards finalists announced
21 April 2006
Futuristic shopping carts, a baby’s cot rocker, a designer beer bottle and vintage-inspired fashion garments are among the finalists vying for top honours in this year’s Queensland Design Awards.
Design Awards Coordinator Scott Bagnell today announced the 74 finalists, in 20 categories, for the 2006 Awards.
Presented by the Design Institute of Australia (Queensland Branch) and Resene, the Queensland Design Awards is the only program of its kind in Queensland recognising excellence across a range of design disciplines.
The finalists were selected from entries in 20 categories grouped under the design disciplines of Interior Design, Three-Dimensional Design and Visual Communication Design.
They include a diverse range of projects from the refurbishment of a childcare centre to the design of a large scale artist’s studio and exhibitions at the Queensland Art Gallery and Queensland Museum. An architect-designed McDonald’s McCafe store on Brisbane’s Northside is competing alongside a café in Brisbane’s upmarket Treasury Casino.
Three panels of local, interstate and international judges recently selected the finalists from a record number of entries.
Awards Coordinator Scott Bagnell said the judges had been impressed by the range and quality of this year’s entries.
“The feedback from the judges was that the Awards program just seems to get better and better every year,” he said.
“We were delighted to see a number of fashion entries for the first time in the Lifestyle Product Design category and to see so many emerging student designers submitting their work.
“It is obvious from the large number of entries that design really is an important part of our Australian lifestyle, from the products that we use to the environments in which we work.”
Bagnell said the Queensland Design Awards winners would be announced on June 2 at the Awards presentation dinner at the Queensland Art Gallery.
An exhibition of the finalists, ‘Design Excellence in Queensland’, will be on display at the Gallery from June 3 to 18, 2006.
