LAMP calls for submissions
17 March 2006
The Laboratory of Advanced Media Production (LAMP) is calling for creative teams from all parts of the Australian media industry to submit cross-media projects for its third live-in-lab to be held in the Swan Valley, Perth, May 7-12, 2006. LAMP is an initiative of the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), funded by the Australian Government.
LAMP is a practical, production and market focused mix of high-level seminars, workshops and immersive rapid prototyping live-in-labs specifically tailored for content creators. The week will be spent developing concepts and production prototypes for delivery on multiple devices.
Project Director Gary Hayes said that LAMP is designed to transform the participants and their projects.
“LAMP uses a proven development model adapted to suit the Australian emerging media landscape, similar to the AFI (US) and BBC lab initiatives,” he said.
“It works because it is 'seeing-by-doing'. Creating a multi-platform prototype is hard work in a week but the reward is in generating a real future for your property.
“LAMP provides access to the production technology, expert mentors, meals and accommodation for the highly-subsidised live-in-lab. It invites creative teams with strong ideas to apply, a simple 2/3 page submission is sufficient.”
LAMP requires teams to be comprised of:
1 - Creator - executive producer, producer, director, writer etc
2 - Designer - broadcast, brand, visual identity
3 - Other craft - editor, writer, talent, sound, DOP etc:
Participants will be led by Australian and international mentors with specialist skills in design, writing, business, user experience and the technical aspects of cross media. LAMP mentor, David Gurney’s company Blue Rocket Productions produced the recent Best of the Best AIMIA award winning Dog & Cat News for the ABC/AFC. He said LAMP was a beacon to guide participants into the brave new world of cross media.
Peter Giles, Head of Digital Media at AFTRS said producers need to make the shift and follow audiences to embrace new delivery platforms such as broadband internet, IPTV, games and mobile devices.
“It's about building new partnerships and thinking outside the square to tailor a message that works across multiple platforms,” he said.
“We've found that the intensive workshop model is extremely effective in developing high-level skills for career professionals working in a dynamic global media environment.”
The first LAMP live-in-lab was run with support of the South Australian Film Corporation in October 2005 and the second lab was run for the ABC in December 2005.
Interested people can apply via the website to deliver concept on mobile devices, interactive television, broadband, games consoles and beyond. The submission deadline is March 31, 2006. For further information visit the site or email lamp@aftrs.edu.au
