arts+medicine magazine, The Creative Health Magazine for Doctors, is a world first - devoted to the subject of arts and health and the positive impact that arts has on health and wellbeing - both in terms of the clinician and their patients.
arts+medicine magazine was launched by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, Governor of New South Wales, on Monday 11 October 2004 at Government House in Sydney.
The magazine has sponsorship support from the Australia Council for the Arts, which also recently published Art and Wellbeing. Jennifer Bott, CEO of the Australia Council, states that "creativity is inextricably linked to our wellbeing - people's lives are changed, and communities and cultures strengthened, whenever imagination is encouraged".
Utilisation of the arts in healthcare is no longer viewed as an alternative approach; rather it is increasingly seen as an essential part of an holistic approach to disease management that encompasses medical treatment, therapy, medication, diet and exercise. The arts can help adjust to living with a medical condition.
The therapeutic effects resulting from the integration of arts and health programs are being quantified. Scientific research shows that the arts can help with many aspects of living with conditions such as stress management and lifestyle changes.
