Hedda Gabler, directed by Sydney Theatre Company's Artistic Director Robyn Nevin, in a new adaptation by Andrew Upton, was invited to New York by BAM Executive Producer Joseph V. Melillo after he saw the production in Sydney in August. Details of the tour were finalised last week. Hedda Gabler will open on 1 March 2006 for a four-week season of 28 performances in the 875-seat BAM Harvey Theatre.
BAM is renowned for hosting some of the greatest theatre and dance companies from around the world, including work by Peter Brook, Ingmar Bergman, Declan Donnellan, Robert Wilson and Pina Bausch. STC toured to BAM in 2001 with its Sydney Olympic Arts' Festival production of The White Devil, directed by Gale Edwards.
"We are thrilled to accept Joe Melillo's invitation to play a season at his prestigious theatre. BAM is one of the most exciting theatre destinations in New York, the BAM Harvey is a beautiful theatre, and Joe is a brilliant producer. I look forward to re-visiting our production with the same wonderful actors and offering what we have to New York audiences," said Robyn Nevin.
"It was an honour to present Sydney Theatre Company's New York debut in 2001. Their return to BAM will be an auspicious one; this exciting production of Hedda Gabler - featuring the BAM debut of Cate Blanchett and the production's talented, original cast under the direction of Robyn Nevin - is an extraordinary theatre experience that I'm eager to share with our audiences," said Joseph V. Melillo.
The original Hedda Gabler acting company is confirmed for the New York season: Cate Blanchett, Annie Byron, Justine Clarke, Julie Hamilton, Hugo Weaving, Anthony Weigh and Aden Young.
STC has already begun its fundraising campaign, which aims to raise the $150,000 needed to stage the production in New York.
