Winners Announced: 2003 Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Artists

05 August 2003

Winners of the Freedman Foundation Traveling Scholarship for Emerging Artists were announced last week at the Sir Hermann Black Gallery and Sculpture Terrace, University of Sydney Union.

Each of the four winners received $5000 that will assist them with overseas travel and study to help further their knowledge of the visual arts and nourish the development of their art practice.

The winners are Lucas Ihlein (NSW), Tim Silver (NSW), David Griggs (NSW) and Renee So (VIC).

Lucas will travel to London, Berlin and Stuttgart in November 2003 to embark on research into three key areas of his art practice – Fluxus, Expanded Cinema and social research projects. Lucas also plans to meet with key artists Emmett Williams, Malcolm Le Grice and Stephen Willats to further his research into these areas.

Tim’s study program takes him to the United States in April/May 2004 to undertake research on acclaimed American artist Robert Smithson. His trip will incorporate a visit to the Spiral Jetty in Utah, Smithson’s earthworks sculpture which was submerged by rising waters just two years after its completion in 1970, and which has since reappeared. He will also travel to New York to visit the Dia Centre which holds the Spiral Jetty and other related material in its trust, as well as the James Cohen Gallery.

David will travel to Los Angeles and San Francisco from September to November inclusive. In LA, he will research sub-cultural groups and underground art, and will research artists Raymond Pettibon and Mike Kelly, renowned for their punk rock album cover art. In San Francisco, David will study the archives of MAXIMUMROCKNROLL Magazine which houses more than 20 years of punk rock music history, and will liaise with the magazine’s contributing artists.

Renee will travel to England in May/June 2004 to undertake six weeks of research and private study in London and Devon. Renee will study at the Christine Morey School of Machine Knitting in Devon for one month and will learn to use DesignaKnit, a software program used in conjunction with knitting machines.

An exhibition showcasing the work of the four scholars, plus work completed by winners of the 2001 scholarship is on until August 27, 2003 at the Sir Hermann Black Gallery, Level 5, Wentworth Building, University of Sydney Union, City Road (entrance via Butlin Ave), Darlington. Ph: (02) 9563 6053
