Muhai Tang
Muhai does Mahler
21 February 2005
Muhai’s Mahler marks the exciting season opening for The Queensland Orchestra. Under the direction of the internationally renowned Muhai Tang, Muhai’s Mahler is the first of 10 concerts in The Queensland Orchestra’s Maestro Series for 2005 and it promises to be an evening of mesmerising orchestral music.
Revered for his incandescent interpretations of Mahler, Muhai Tang has turned his attention to the most popular work in the Mahler cycle. With its glorious Adagietto - made famous in the film Death in Venice - Mahler’s rarely performed Fifth Symphony is widely regarded as an affirmation of life like no other. And under the direction of Tang, The Queensland Orchestra will present Mahler’s Fifth Symphony as part of a ‘Viennese’ double bill. The first half of the program will be Mozart’s infamous “bound to make the performer perspire” Piano Concerto No 17 with renowned Australian pianist, and TQO audience favourite, Angela Lam.
Muhai’s Mahler, as well as heralding the start of the 2005 TQO season also, significantly, represents Tang’s return to Australia and The Queensland Orchestra. Having been appointed Musical Director of the Finnish National Opera after a successful 2003 season there, Tang’s return to The Queensland Orchestra for this Maestro Series performance reflects the close relationship he formed with TQO throughout his 10 year tenure as its Principal Conductor.
Other highlights from the Maestro series include the forthcoming Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony on 23 April and the New World concert on 11 June, featuring Rachmaninov’s Piano Concert No.3 and Dvorak’s Symphony No.9.
Muhai’s Mahler will feature a pre-concert talk with Sherelle Eyles at 6.45pm in the Concert Hall.
